Good hair care products have been the hardest cruelty free product to find for me. I’ve always searched for products that will make my hair super silky but I rarely find something that’s more than ‘eh.’ I recently tried out some products from John Masters Organics after getting some hair samples in a Love Lula beauty box.

I tried out a leave-in treatment to use just after I’ve washed my hair and a leave in conditioner for when I’m styling my hair. Here’s how the products performed and the techniques I used to increase silkiness!

        How To Get Shiny Hair

The John Masters Organics ‘Shine On’ is a leave-in conditioning treatment. When it first came I thought it was a hair gel. I’ve never seen a conditioning treatment like this before. You scoop it up like a gel but then it turns into more of a watery consistency. Consistency is key! One of the biggest mistakes in trying to revitalise your hair is using too many products that leave residue in your hair. If a treatment is too thick for your hair type or you’ve used too many products, you’re left with a product build up, which actually dulls the hair.

It might seem like the obvious thing to do is to use loads of a moisturising product for added benefits, but it can have the opposite effect. My hair is pretty thick, but I still can’t use products that are super heavy too often. Which is why this treatment from John Masters is perfect.

It doesn’t leave a residue in your hair and uses natural ingredients to replace silicone. It contains organic kelp instead of a synthetic silicone. I notice the benefits the most when I’m blowdrying my hair as it helps to keep my hair feeling soft and hydrated. When my hair is short I tend to heat style it a lot more, so this helps to rectify that somewhat.

If you have fine hair then this will be a great product to try out instead of thick creams and butters.

        How To Get Soft Hair

Soft hair does come with the increased shine. But to get your hair to feel super silky soft you need to combine a few techniques.

Firstly, the best way to towel dry. A lot of people rub a towel through their hair after they’ve washed it, but this can be damaging. You want to squeeze out the moistures and only rub it in the direction of the hair. Your hair is soft and shiny when the hair cuticle is closed but rubbing it ‘brushes up the cuticle’ (definitely not a technical term).

The best way to get soft hair when styling it is to use heat. As much as I hate to say it, it really does help. You can definitely skip this step if you’re avoiding heat. Excessive heat WILL cause damage and reduce shine, but if you are careful with it, it’ll add a lot of shine to your hairstyle. First step is to protect. I have been using the John Masters leave in conditioning mist. As I said, you want to make sure the products you use aren’t too heavy, to this lets me just mist it through my hair without weighing it down. If your hair is looking dull because it’s dry, this will help to revitalise. It contains natural oils which are the key to keeping your hair soft. Just like rubbing oils into the skin, oils help to moisturise the hair too. When you use them while heat styling, you’ll notice your hair becomes a lot softer.

Because it is a light mist you can add it to dry hair before styling, or even just to add a bit of moisture. This would be a great product to take on holiday if you’re going to be in the sun a lot. The light mist is also perfect for people with fine hair as it won’t weigh it down.

When drying your hair with heat, make sure you’re only blowing heat in the direction of the hair. Try not to get too close to the hair to avoid it getting frizzy.

You can mist a bit of the spray on after your hair has dried to help tame any frizz or to just add a bit of moisture. I like to mist it towards the ends of my hair (to avoid too much oil at the roots) and comb it through to smooth it out.

I’ve been doing this for about a month now and have noticed a huge improvement in how soft and shiny my hair is. So much so that I can’t stop touching it!

This looks fab, I might have to try it out!
