There’s nothing worse than tossing and turning, struggling to get to sleep at night – especially if you know you’ve got to be up for something important. Lots of sleepless nights take their toll, so try these easy, natural methods for getting a better sleep, faster.
1. Watch something slow paced
We tend to think that watching t.v keeps us up at night, but rather than fight it, use it to your advantage. I like to wind down with something quite mindless that won’t get my brain thinking over things. You don’t want a film that you have to focus on or something filled with action. I quite like to watch chatty Youtube videos. To be quite honest, when people are talking about their day or life for 30mins on Youtube, I switch off. But having someone quite chilled out talking to you at a slow pace gets those tired eyes going.
Bonus tip: Start to turn the brightness of your screen down in the evening.
2. Create an evening routine
Even if you don’t have a high-maintenance beauty routine, creating a routine that helps you wind down in the evening not only helps you to relax but signals to your body that you’re about to go to sleep. Have a bath, take off your makeup, cleanse your skin and use some relaxing body oils.
Two products I’ve been loving for a relaxing evening routine are the Deep Peace Mineral Soak and Deep Peace Organic Body Oil from Botanicals. They both smell delicious and have a super relaxing lavender scent. As soon as I smell these I feel ready for bed.
The organic body oil contains a ‘blend of soothing lavender, rose geranium, sandalwood and marjoram, promotes deep relaxation, whilst enriching the skin with essential nutrients.’
It absorbs into the skin really quickly – which is great because you don’t want to feel like you’re getting oil all over your bed sheets. It also means that it doesn’t feel uncomfortable to sleep in.
The best part about this is that the soothing aroma lingers on your skin to help you drift off when you finally get into bed.
The Mineral soak is also very relaxing. Something I have found with bath bombs and bath products is that they smell amazing but it’s not always a relaxing smell. Where as lavender scents automatically put you in a relaxed mood. The mineral soak helps your muscles to unwind while also soothing and softening your skin. This is something that you could use regularly and don’t have to worry about any nasty chemicals.
It contains himalayan rock salt, dead sea salt and a blend of essential oils and all you need to do is sprinkle it into the bath.
Something I’ve noticed that helps relax me before bed time is not going through my entire grooming routine. If I have a bath and then shave my legs and then clean the bath afterwards, it tends to counteract the relaxing nature of the bath. So to make sure you’re as relaxed as possible, try to do as little ‘chores’ as possible.
3. Drink the right amount of water before bed
This might seem strange but getting the balance right has a big effect and it might take a little trial and error. Staying hydrated will ensure you have a much better sleep and will also make sure you’re not waking up in the middle of the night thirsty. But having too much to drink right before you go to sleep might mean that you’re waking up in the middle of the night to go to the toilet.
It sounds silly but too little or too much water means you’ll get a broken sleep from having to wake up in the middle of the night. I try to drink as much water as I can (I’m not always great at this though) an hour before bed time so that I can go to the toilet before and hopefully not have to get up again.
Make sure you keep a glass of water next to you so that you’ve got immediate access if you do get dehydrated – especially in the summer.
4. Use essential oils
Find an essential oil that you like the smell of the most and add a few drops to your pillow before you go to sleep. I like lavender oil, which I’ve really used to associate with sleep. Try not to choose an oil that you use in the day time as you want to create an association between the smell and going to sleep. Lavender oil is really soothing so it’ll help you unwind once you’re in bed.
5. Drink Tea
When I first started drinking mint tea, it used to put me in such a relaxed state. It was almost as though I’d had a little bit of wine. Unfortunately it doesn’t quite have the same impact on me but I do still associate it with a relaxed state. Try a non-caffeinated herbal tea like peppermint or chamomile that is soothing. The hot drink will automatically help to relax you while the mint or chamomile relaxes your muscles. Have about 30 minutes – 1 hour before bed time and feel yourself begin to relax.
